Each week we recite together the words of the Nicene Creed. It’s a centuries-old creed that centers us to our faith and the history of the church.
We say it each week for many reasons, a few do stand out though:
1. First we say it to “affirm our faith” as our celebrant announces it every time we say it.
2. Secondly, it always follows the sermon to serve as both a guide for what we heard and as a correction in case anything said, whether by mistake or intent, can be redirected back to what we believe.
3. Thirdly, it helps to connect us to our fellow believers universally, in time and place; we are all united by God and as we together say this affirmation, thousands of others are saying this with us every week.
The Nicene Creed was created in the year 325 AD, and we together with all of history affirm our faith in God this way. Let it be a guide to us all to affirm our faith in word and in deed.
